Property owners in Spokane County have seen property values rise 30% in the past year. Those valuations are the county’s estimates as of Jan. 1 and tend to be lower than what a property would fetch on the market. For the 2023 tax year, the average Spokane County home has an assessed value of $418,800. That’s up from $320,900 the year before and more than double the $192,300 figure from the 2017 tax year.
Spokane County Assessor Tom Konis says it’s among the largest increases he has seen in his 29 year history with the office. A lack of housing supply, coupled with increasing demand has led to unprecedented rises in home sales prices. Taxes for next year are based on the assessments for this year. With rising home values, local school districts have seen large increases in revenue based on recent levies that set the tax based on a per thousand valuation.
Residents have 30 days to appeal their assessment if they feel it is too high. Konis says the first step is to reach out to the appraiser who has their name on the postcard you received in the mail with your assessment.
Additionally, Spokane County does have property tax exemptions for those who are over 61 year old, or those who are disabled. If you make less than $40,000 per year, you may qualify.
